2011 TORCH AwardSt. Louis, Mo., Aug. 8, 2011 - McCarthy Building Companies Inc., a 147-year-old contractor based in the St. Louis suburb of Rock Hill, Mo., is the 2011 winner of the top TORCH Award from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in St. Louis.

On November 30, the BBB will recognize McCarthy’s leadership in business ethics by presenting this year’s top TORCH Award to Derek Glanvill, McCarthy’s corporate president and chief operating officer. Glanvill will be the eleventh business leader from Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois to receive the award, which recognizes excellence in customer service, employee relations and ethical business practices.

Glanvill will speak at a luncheon at noon Wednesday, November 30, in the Khorassan Ballroom of the Chase Park Plaza. Last year’s honoree, Hugh Grant, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Monsanto Company, will be the honorary chair and will introduce Glanvill. KSDK News Anchor Jennifer Blome will emcee the event.

McCarthy is one of the nation’s oldest privately held companies. Timothy McCarthy founded the company in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1864. His sons moved the company to St. Louis in 1917, where it has grown to one of the nation’s premier commercial builders. The firm has been 100 percent employee-owned since 2002.

“Our never-ending goal is to be the best builder in America,” Glanvill said. The company works with clients and partners in an honest and open way to give them confidence that the company will deliver—and has delivered—what was expected and more. The company’s core values are: integrity, learning, excellence, people, community and dedication.

“Our aim is always to develop genuine relationships based on trust and respect,” Glanvill added. “Truth and integrity are not merely promises to our clients, business partners, employees and communities, but are as fundamental as the bricks and mortar of our buildings. As an employee-owned company, our employees take personal pride in working hard every day to exceed expectations.”

McCarthy has 1,500 salaried employees nationwide, including 400 in the St. Louis area.

In addition to McCarthy, local TORCH Award winners will be honored at the November banquet, and the BBB will award three “Student of Ethics” awards to high school students from Missouri and Illinois.

The BBB urges you to join leaders in eastern Missouri and southern Illinois in honoring trusted businesses and charities in the region.
